Reclassify Cannabis

California Officially Calls On Feds To Reclassify Marijuana

Last November, California voters approved a ballot measure to legalize marijuana. Now, the state’s lawmakers are formally calling on the federal government to reclassify cannabis.

“The Legislature urges the Congress of the United States to pass a law to reschedule marijuana or cannabis and its derivatives from a Schedule I drug to an alternative schedule, therefore allowing the legal research and development of marijuana or cannabis for medical use,” reads a joint resolution approved by the California Assembly on Thursday with a vote of 60 to 10.

New federal bill would reschedule marijuana as Schedule III
Having marijuana on a lower rung would uphold the rights of states that have legalized the medical use of cannabis, allow for banking activities and create a clearer path for research, says the bill’s sponsor

The latest marijuana-centric bill before Congress would place cannabis as a Schedule III substance, a classification shared by Tylenol with codeine, ketamine and dronabinol.

Two Florida congressmen, Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz and Democratic Rep. Darren Soto, introduced legislation Thursday that would transfer marijuana to Schedule III of the Controlled Substances Act from its current standing as a Schedule I substance, the strictest of the classifications.

Government of Canada to invest in cannabis education and awareness

New funds to bring total investment in public education, awareness and surveillance to $46M

The Government of Canada introduced legislation to legalize, strictly regulate and restrict access to cannabis to keep it out of the hands of Canadian youth and the profits from criminals and organized crime. With this in mind, the Government intends to make significant investments in public education to inform Canadians, particularly youth and young adults, about the health and safety risks of cannabis.

Today the Government announced a new investment of $36.4M over the next five years for a cannabis education and awareness campaign. The funding will be used to inform Canadians, including youth and other priority populations such as Indigenous peoples, pregnant and breastfeeding women, and Canadians with a history of mental illness, of the health and safety risks of cannabis use and drug-impaired driving.

Medical Marijuana Reclassified Under International Law?

Medical marijuana could receive a much-needed reclassification under international law before 2018.

The World Health Organization’s Expert Committee on Drug Dependence (ECDD), which has played in integral role throughout the years in how marijuana is revered in the eyes of the United Nations, has decided to give some consideration to whether “medical marijuana” should be downgraded from its current classification under the UN Single Convention.

The organization revealed plans last month to hold a special session within the next year and a half to debate this issue, according to a report from Americans for Safe Access (ASA).

This major development was reportedly made known through the distribution of an announcement at the latest Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND) meeting in Vienna. The document explains that the 38th Expert Committee on Drug Dependence recognizes “the emergence of new cannabis-related pharmaceutical preparations for therapeutic use.”
