Why New York? Why Now? WHY NOT?! The biggest and (arguably) greatest city in the world is also the cannabis arrest capital in the world. From 1978 to 1996, 49,326 New Yorkers were arrested for marijuana possession. In 2010, that number was 50,383. In 2011, that number rose to 52,220. In 2012, that number dropped to 40,661–but marijuana possession still remains New York’s number one cause for arrest. Still, that hasn’t stopped New York from embracing all things weed. With that in mind, we hit the streets of New York to capture the heart and soul of its movement. video is an introduction of more to come: a celebration of New York’s diverse culture with the goal that both New Yorkers and everyone embraces the movement to end Marijuana Prohibition. Weedmaps has been pushing legalization all over the world, but we figured the time was high to make this push in the world’s most important city. Because if we can legalize New York–then the rest of the country and world will surely follow. Stay tuned!
